what to do when someone has died

When struggling with feelings of loss and grief, it’s not that easy to get to grips with the procedures and processes that have to be followed when someone has died.

seek advice and support

Customers: If you are a customer of Engage Mutual, you or your family members have free access to The Co-operative Bereavement Advice Line (you can call 0800 0930560).  This provides sympathetic and confidential guidance on practical matters, together with advice on the legal, tax and administrative issues around someone’s death.

Non customers: If you are not a customer of Engage Mutual, you can still receive support and free initial advice from The Co-operative Legal Services (you can call 0845 6021416).

starting point

We’ve put together some general guidance here in association with The Co-operative Funeralcare, which might provide a helpful starting point in finding a way through what can seem an overwhelming process.

The starting point guidance covers the following:

understanding the practical aspects of dealing with someone’s death
registering a death
arranging a funeral
paying for the funeral
financial help for spouses/partners
changing financial circumstances
dealing with the deceased’s affairs
probate in England, Wales and Northern Ireland
confirmation in Scotland
notifying relevant authorities
protecting unoccupied property
where to go from here

We hope our starting point information proves useful.

Please be aware: our starting point guide is based on current information.   This information provides a basic overview only, so you should not rely on it to make decisions.
