It is the first paper in the full qualification of Certificate of Financial Planning – the minimum qualification required for someone wanting to be a financial adviser.
The syllabus covers the basics in financial services including all the products available to private investors; the advice process and personal taxation.
Not only does the course provide a valuable foundation towards a full qualification recognised throughout the financial services industry, helping you to change or further your career but also information you can use for the rest of your life when making decisions about your own finances.
Although CFP1 is useful on it’s own it is also the foundation stone to several full qualifications, simply add;
- CFP6 for the Certificate in Mortgage Advice required for Mortgage Advisers
- FA1 to complete Certificate in Financial Administration (Life Office) – for back office and supervisory staff working with Financial Advisers, firms or financial services companies
- FA2 to complete Certificate in Financial Administration (Pensions) – for back office and supervisory staff working with Financial Advisers, firms or financial services companies
- CFP2 to CFP5 to complete the full Certificate in Financial Planning for people wishing to become financial advisers

Through engage Mutual Administration Ltd, engage Learning has it’s customers at the heart of everything it does – and you are no exception. Our experienced training team, having established a proven track record with these exams, would like to share their experience with others.
The trainer has a background in Financial Services and is a qualified Financial and Mortgage Adviser in addition to holding The Certificate in Training Practice and other training related courses and experience. We believe that this combined experience helps to make this syllabus come to life for delegates – especially those who are new to financial services.
We use a tried and tested method for this training. You will be provided with a suggested reading programme prior to the course along with your joining instructions.
It is important to note that these are workshops are to support your learning – you will need to make sure that you have prepared in advance to get the most out of them.
The workshops themselves are trainer led and aim to explore areas of the syllabus. The workshops are interactive but you will not be expected do anything embarrassing or be put on the spot to answer unexpected questions in front of others. There will be handouts, exercises and practise questions to complete throughout to help illustrate specific issues and prepare you for your exam.
You will be provided with a course book to read before you attend your workshops. You will also be provided with a course timetable so that you can tailor your reading or revision for the next workshop.
There will be lots of opportunities throughout the workshops for you to reinforce your learning; ask questions and discuss answers as a group.
The final workshop will be a chance for revision – this will be led by you as a group so that the focus is on what you need. The groups needs will be established by the completion of a mock exam prior to the workshop.
You will complete your exam at the end of the course.
During the course you will be provided with lunch and refreshments throughout the day.
If you would like further support you will be able to contact the trainer outside workshop times.
The cost of the course is £750 + exam fee (currently £90) – all payable prior to the course. There is no additional VAT payable.
Should you cancel your booking up to 2 full weeks before the course starts you will be entitled to an 80% refund of the course fee and a full refund of your exam fee.
Should you cancel with less than two weeks before the start date of the course you will be entitled to a refund of 50%, although your exam fee will not be refunded.
There will be no refund if you pull out during the course.

The course itself is over 5 days. The scheduled times will be 9.30am to 4.30pm although these timings may be negotiated - but only with the agreement of the whole group on the first day.
You can choose to complete the course by attending workshops one day per week over five weeks or by attending an intensive course with the five workshops being held over a single week, Monday to Friday.
You will need to spend some time preparing prior to the workshops. You will be sent a workbook and suggested preparation schedule with your joining instructions prior to the course.
The exam itself is a two hour exam, with a 20 minute familiarisation exercise prior to it. You will take the exam during the afternoon of the final day.

You will take the exam during the afternoon of the final day and your provisional results will be provided instantly. Formal notification will follow by post to the address provided around a week later.
You will be able to re-take the exam with a minimum of 7 full working days notice (or longer if you wish). You will still be able to receive support from the trainer during this time.
The recommended total study time for this exam is 60 hours – however, this will vary with each person.
The workshops will provide around 25 hours and reading the text prior to the workshop should account for a further 20. Your own revision should take care of the rest!
Ask! The chances are if you are unsure then other members of the group will be as well. Questions and thoughts will be most welcome during the workshops.
You will also be able to contact the trainer in between workshops for additional support and clarification.
You should make every effort to attend all the workshops - engage Learning use a tried and tested programme and it has been shown without doubt that missing a workshop damages your progress.
However, your course book contains the information you need. You will also have access to the workshop notes if you wish.
Again, the trainer will be available for support but will not be able to replace the time missed from the workshop.
